America has a transportation system designed to move cars quickly, but not people safely, according to an article in the New York Times. As a result, the U.S. surpasses other developed nations in roadway deaths, putting drivers, cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians at risk.
The article described how America’s roadway fatalities were similar to other countries in the past, but that’s no longer the case. While, over the past 25 years, other countries have lowered speed limits, built bike lanes, and constructed roundabouts instead of intersections, in the United States, Americans are now three times as likely to die in a roadway crash. Nearly 43,000 people died on America’s roads in 2021.
There are many reasons why motor vehicle accidents happen and people are hurt. Sometimes it is because someone was negligent, or it can even be due to poor road design.
