Paralyzed from the neck down, 21-year-old Calvin Saunders lies motionless in a hospital bed, in constant pain and wondering why he ended up a quadriplegic.

Saunders was arrested April 1 in South Philadelphia after police allegedly spotted him driving a stolen Acura Legend. Saunders sustained a cut to the ear in a struggle with the arresting officers and was taken to St. Agnes Medical Center in the back of a police van, handcuffed.

When he reached the hospital, he couldn’t move his arms or legs. Police had to summon a wheelchair to get him into the emergency room.
